Maintaining Good Health Is a Year-Round Pursuit
By Tom Herrin
The weather may change and the temperatures may drop, but those who are dedicated to improving and maintaining their health will not let that stop them. There are those, however, who lack a little bit of the drive to be so focused. The fact is that it is not all that difficult to keep the work going. It may only involve a little fine-tuning of the routine or activities. Just like any sporting event, the ability to modify the game in order to be more successful can bring about good results. If results is what the goal is, the changes are worth it.
Be Observant with Breathing
People can struggle when they are taking in cold air. It is somewhat of a shock to the system. The natural response of the body is to produce some kind of fluid. People will notice this when they run or ride a bike in the cold. They may feel that they are getting sick because they notice they have a runny nose. This is a protection the body uses as a defense. A good practice is to wear a mask or scarf over the face and nose. This can help to warm the air and make it easier on the respiratory system.
Limit Exposure to the Cold
There is a point in which people should push themselves in the cold, and there is a point at which they should seek a warmer place. People are made to adapt to small bits of cold at a time. The main thing is to have a place to retreat to for some warmth and protection. When people can warm up, they will be better prepared to deal with the cold. Making this process gradual can bring about greater success so that people can develop a greater ability to stand the cold.
Dress for the Temperature
One of the biggest mistakes we can make is to treat every day the same. Heading out the door in the same kind of clothes we wear in the warm weather is a problem. I have done that myself before thinking that it is not so bad. Was I ever wrong. I have had to turn around quickly and change my clothes. Too many times, I lose the drive while I am changing. Wearing layers can be the best way to be prepared. You can take off what makes you too warm and still keep on going. The main thing we want is to be successful.
