Put Down the Books for Exercise?

By Tom Herrin

A lot of people grew up in a time when they were expected to hit the books if they expected to do anything that could help the mind.  In order to increase learning, they understood it took long hours of studying.  While it is still important for them to spend some quality time studying, though the mode of delivery has changed, it has now been discovered that there are a few other ways to improve brain function without a huge sacrifice of time.  In many cases, exercise may be able to do some things for the brain that can pay off now and in the future. That is important for everyone.

Exercise May Play a Role in Better Memory

For years, it has been a struggle for many people to hang on to their memory and improve it.  It seems that much of the work of memory has to do with the hippocampus.  It also seems that exercise may help to increase the capacity of parts of the hippocampus.  As a result, exercise may be able to increase its size and, therefore, ability.  According to one study, participants who exercised had better spatial memory meaning that they could identify things and their location.

Grow New Neurons

The brain is a very complicated organ.  It is made of many parts that each has its own job.  Neurons are critical to new learning.  When people learn new information, these neurons help to store this information.  At one time, many believed that the growth and development of neurons was limited.  Newer research has revealed that exercise may help to promote this development.  If people can have new neurons by exercising, it seems like it could be another good reason to add more of it to the everyday routine.  Who wouldn't like some easier ways to add to their brain?

Maintenance Is Critical

I try to be serious about maintaining my health.  It is both easy and easy to neglect.  Getting on a good routine can be a great investment of time and effort.  It is also pretty easy to get sidetracked and allow too many other things to get in the way.  I feel that protecting brain function is as important as protecting physical health.  I intend to do my best to take care of my total health.  Including my mental health is a big part of it.
