What Are You Willing to do to Protect Yourself?

By Tom Herrin

Without a doubt, there has been a lot of stir about the pandemic that has swept across the planet for about the past year.  It has touched everyone in some way.  Many have lost loved ones.  Hospitals have been overwhelmed.  Our lives have changed dramatically.  Our traditions have been put on hold.  We have anxiously awaited some kind of progress with good news.  Now that it is here, most of us will be faced with another big decision.  Will we take the vaccine?  All of us will likely be faced with this choice sometime in the next few months.  It may serve us well to decide ahead of time what our answer will be.

Vaccines May Return Us to Normal

For much of the past, many civilizations have dealt with disease by using quarantines.  It may have been their only defense.  The discovery and development of the smallpox vaccine revolutionized thinking.  It was successful enough to minimize, and later eliminate, the threat of a dreaded illness.  In the past few years, the vaccine for polio has saved large numbers.  Others such as DPT and MMR have become standards. Many of these former childhood diseases are no longer seen as potentially damaging to life and overall health.  Rubella was once a major cause of birth defects, but the vaccine has eliminated that risk.  We can now go about life with relative confidence because of them.

Vaccines Could Threaten Health

With all of the advancements in vaccines, they have still had some problems.  Some have simply been poor quality.  Others have initiated reactions in those who took them.  Some of these reactions have been mild while others have been quite serious.  A few reactions have been fever, soreness, sleep problems, and seizures.  Some individuals fear taking them due to the notion of taking something foreign into their bodies.  Others fear they are being used to control them.

We May Choose Freely

It is fortunate that each of us can make our own decisions.  For the most part, no one will be making us take one against our will.  Healthcare workers will be our examples.  We will serve ourselves well to spend time now reading, researching, and evaluating.  When we have the chance to make that decision, it should be one to which we have given our best meditative thought.  I personally may choose to play the odds.
