Healthy Milk May Enrich a Diet
By Tom Herrin
As we continually make attempts to develop the best diet possible, we try to include foods that we believe will do us the most good without wasting calories. When we were children, milk made up the bulk of our diet. It is an essential component to a healthy diet for the young and developing. It supports good growth. As we got a little older, we added many other foods and, likely, reduced the amount of milk. Some of us may have cut milk out of our diets completely. In many cases, this may have been a mistake that could have lots of consequences to our health.
Milk May Support Health in Several Ways
Milk tends to be filling. It is high in protein as well as water. This is a good combination for deterring hunger. It is believed to help the heart. It has some important minerals. We have always touted it for its calcium, but it has magnesium and potassium as well. These combine to be helpful for strong bones and teeth. Potassium is helpful in maintaining good blood pressure. Drinking milk containing fat is now considered to be beneficial in raising good cholesterol. For years, many have advocated drinking skim milk to avoid the fats, so this information is still in a formative stage.
Milk Makes Some People Sick
There are some who legitimately cannot tolerate milk from cows. It may be for a variety of reasons. The fat in milk bothers some. Others have little or no ability to handle lactose, or milk sugar. In more recent times, there have been findings regarding the proteins in milk there are more than one kind, and the one called A1 seems to make some people sick. It is a balancing act in an effort to take in the things they need yet avoid things that may make them sick.
Alternatives May Be Useful
For those who could benefit from what milk has to offer but can't drink it, there are some options.. Many companies now have milk that is lactose-free. Some producers are able to offer A2 milk that does not have the A1 protein. Other options include almond milk. It comes in a variety of flavors and, generally, may be used in place of cows' milk. It has more calcium than other milk without some of the things that may cause problems.
