Is Too Much Vitamin D Harmful?

By Randi Morse

Head into any pharmacy and you will find row after row of vitamins. It's fantastic that we are now able to purchase our vitamins in pill form, especially for those people who are picky eaters. Getting the right nutrition, and vitamins and minerals, is important. But is there such a thing as too much vitamins?

Vitamin D has a very important role in your body. It helps your body to absorb calcium, it protects your bones, it also helps to keep your muscles and heart running correctly. But it's also possible to get too much Vitamin D. While this is fairly rare, Vitamin D toxicity is a serious situation and can cause a number of problems.

Your Blood Calcium

Vitamin D is vital in helping your body absorb calcium. It takes calcium from the food and puts it back into the body, using the bloodstream for transport. If you have too much Vitamin D in your system, the calcium in your blood can reach levels that may be dangerous. This is known as hypercalcemia. Common symptoms of hypocalcemia include frequent urination, fatigue, dizziness, digestive distress, and confusion.

Your Bones

Vitamin D helps to take the calcium from the food you eat and puts it into your body in order to help maintain strong bones. While the right amount of Vitamin D helps keep your bones healthy, too much Vitamin D may actually be harmful. If you have too much Vitamin D in your body, you may discover that you are dealing with the symptoms of bone loss. Taking the right amount of Vitamin D, and adding foods that are known to have Vitamin K2 in them, is the best way to keep your bones healthy and strong, period

Your Kidneys

Your kidneys play a vital role in your body, filtering out any wastes in your blood and getting rid of the extra water in your body. An excessive amount of Vitamin D may cause moderate or severe kidney failure. There was a study done that showed that 62 people who got extremely high doses of Vitamin D experienced kidney failure. Kidney failure is not something that is easily reversed, and if the kidney is damaged too much the only solution is dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Getting the right amount of vitamins and minerals in your body is extremely important, but some nutritionists caution at imbibing vitamins and minerals in their pill form. They claim that you can get enough vitamins and minerals by having a healthy diet, which would then help significantly reduce the risk of Vitamin D toxicity.
