Best Foods to Eat When You're Sick

Getting sick is no fun. People try to treat their sickness in different ways, and eating more may be one of them. If that is the case, it is important to know that some foods may actually make the problem worse. You can often help prevent more severe problems from occurring simply by avoiding the wrong foods and choosing ones that will work with you.

When you are constipated, you will want to stay away from foods such as dairy products, pain medications, and chocolate. Some medications used for blood pressure and depression will not help, either, so read the labels to be sure. Instead, you want to eat foods that are high in fiber, including beans, oatmeal, broccoli, breads that are whole grain, and some fruit such as apples.

Sore throats can be aggravated by hot liquids and acidic juices, such as those that come from raw fruits and vegetables. Hard foods will also irritate your throat, and this will include various kinds of chips, granola, and nuts. Soft and creamy foods are best, such as the kind you would get from creamy soups, mashed potatoes, yogurt and custards.

Having to run to the bathroom often with diarrhea is another common problem that can be helped or hurt by what you eat. You can make it worse by eating dairy products, or caffeine, and alcohol. The best foods are found in the BRAT list, which is bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. You may also want to eat saltine crackers, oatmeal, boiled potatoes, and chicken or turkey with the skin removed.

When your whole body suffers from achiness, you want to stay away from anything that will dehydrate you, such as caffeine or alcohol. This problem may also lead to headaches. You may be able to remedy the problem simply by drinking water and waiting about 20 minutes. Foods that will help include those with magnesium, such as bananas, leafy greens, and nuts.
