Will We Ever Know the Truth Behind ""Healthy"" Red Wine ?

In the realm of health and wellness, there is so much conflicting information that we may have a hard time getting a handle on what is true and what is false. We may read one source about a nutritional behavior, and then days later read a study that proves the first source to be false. We may hear something about our health on a television show and then take to the internet only to find that this assertion is confounded in nothing and is in fact not true.

One of the most common instances in which we hear conflicting information is the debate over the health benefits of red wine. Some organizations and institutions claim that red wine is beneficial for our health, while others cast doubt on red wine’s effectiveness in improving health and wellness outcomes, claiming it is just as bad as any other alcohol we consume. So who do we believe and how can we find the best possible information?

According to one of the leading medical institutions in the United States, The Mayo Clinic, red wine is in fact beneficial to multiple aspects of our health in moderation. Specifically, The Mayo Clinic cites the benefits of red wine to be rooted in cardiovascular health and antioxidant content.

One of the most present antioxidants found in red wine is called resveratrol. Antioxidants are chemical compounds that inhibit free radicals from doing any sort of damage to different body parts. With respect to resveratrol, research with the use of animal models has shown that this antioxidant may reduce the potential for free radicals to damage blood vessels. Additionally, this antioxidant has been linked to the reduction of low density lipoproteins, which take up significant space in blood vessels and cause problems with circulation.  This can prohibit the formation of blood clots, which can lead to mortality if they develop in certain places in the body, mainly the brain.

While there are cited benefits to red wine consumption, it is not recommended by any medical institution that we look to any sort of alcohol for health benefits. We need to remember that all alcohol, including red wine, needs to be consumed in moderation. However, if you enjoy a glass of red wine every now and then, you can potentially be establishing heightened levels of health and wellness with some contribution to your cardiovascular health.
