Regular Childhood Headaches Find Chiropractic Relief
By Chris Brown
As a parent, seeing your child in pain can be a traumatic experience even if the cause isn't serious. A child with sudden, regular headaches causes such a situation. Even if your doctor has ruled out any serious diagnosis, regular headaches can be tortuous if they routinely put your child in pain. This can make any parent desperate for a solution. When mainstream medicine's drug-happy, trial-and-error approach fails, chiropractic may be able to provide that miracle, drug-free relief from head pain your child needs.
What Causes Regular Headaches in Children?
Headaches' wide range of causes, especially with children, makes it often hard to diagnose a trigger. Genetic factors, illness, dehydration, cerebral dysfunction, poor sleep, eye strain, and food allergies can all attribute to headaches. Essentially anything that causes an overactivity or problems in a brain-area can lead to headaches. About 5 percent of kindergarteners and up to a fourth of high school aged children experience regular headaches. Most of the time it does not mean a serious causal reason, but it is always a good idea to get evaluated by a medical doctor if there is any concern. If there is no serious underlying condition, chiropractic has shown great promise in relieving and preventing future headache episodes in children.
Chiropractic Relieves Children's Headaches
Studies have shown chiropractic to be an effective, safe treatment for children with reoccurring headaches. In one study of 199 headache-prone children aged 7-14 years old, chiropractic manipulation over four months led to a 20 percent reduction in headaches versus the control-group's sham procedure. In a more acute injury case study, a six-year-old with a history of fatigue experienced a head and neck injury that resulted in regular headaches, vomiting, and neck movement disability. After five chiropractic treatments, all of the child's symptoms had dissipated and by the ninth treatment she had complete spinal stability, which enabled her to resume normal activity. The child continued treatments until she was completely asymptomatic, at 19 treatments, and her neck disability index had recovered to a zero percent injury level. This unbelievable recovery speaks to chiropractic's ability to resolve headaches and other connected symptoms of head-related injuries in children. Children may provide an opportunity for even better results from spinal manipulation than adults. This is because chiropractic works by optimizing the body's natural healing ability, which is stronger in younger, more malleable body systems.
