6 Savvy Habits of Mentally Strong People

By Sandy Schroeder

Most of us know the difference between people who are mentally strong, or not. When difficult issues come up, the people who are mentally strong often shine. They have been around the bases before and they know what to do to make it all work.

Dr. Travis Bradberry, co-founder of TalentSmart, an agency that services 75 percent of the Fortune 500 companies, took a look at this issue and gave us some thoughts that are well worth considering.

Keep Fighting When Everybody Else Gives Up

The most successful people that I know often worked long hours, and kept going when everybody else had gone home. When a big project looked like it was in trouble, they just keep reaching out and speaking up to power it forward. Often that kind of tenacity inspired others around him to hang in too. When you are tempted to quit, don’t. If you make it a habit to hang in there, it will get easier as it goes along.

Learn to Postpone Rewards

The most successful people usually learn to forgo instant gratification in favor of endpoint rewards. Often big projects demand a lot of patience and strategic input to make them happen. Mentally strong people know this and just keep going.

When You Slip Pick Yourself Up

Everybody makes mistakes, but not everyone keeps going to try again and again. Some leaders will tell you they made many attempts before they finally scored with a major success. One friend of mine said he was down to the wire on money, and living with a friend when he finally scored on the design that earned him patents that went on to make him a millionaire. His message to others was simple. Never give up.

Stay Level to Think Clearly

Mentally tough people may feel just as strongly as others, but they know emotions can cloud thinking and confuse the subject. When you are involved in an important project with lots of people, keep your eye on the content and overall goals. Avoid mood swings with highs and lows.

Focus on the Details Every Time

When projects are long and tiredness sets in, the mentally strong keep going. They manage to stay focused on the details and overall goals, and often get a second wind to push everything on through.

Be Accountable No Matter What

Sometimes it is tough to step up and admit mistakes, but that’s what it takes to keep working with people and earn their respect. No one’s perfect, and pretending you are simply does not fly.
