How We See Ourselves Can Help or Hurt Our Health

Have you thought about how you see yourself?According to a recent Easy Health Options article, your view may be helping or hurting your health.

What Happens Next!

Researchers looked at people who thought they were heavier or lighter than they really were, and showed how many health problems those incorrect views triggered. They also looked at others who experienced great pain every day, but stayed positive and pursued their dreams, making them happen anyway.

I have always believed taking the positive view makes a real difference. But it looks like the positive view may soon get more research attention as a real health tool.

Over the years, I have watched people move ahead or hesitate, and fall back. Their attitudes matched the direction their lives took.

One lady that I knew, had just turned ninety and she was incredible. One night she fell in her bathroom, and was not rescued until the following morning. She went right into surgery and came out with a pin in her hip. From the hospital she went to two different rehabilitation centers and worked her way through a painful recovery. Her attitude never wavered. She kept right on going. After rehab she returned to her own home to live independently again. A year later, on her birthday she was back in her home, calling her own shots, and doing well. I think her positive attitude made a huge difference.

I have seen other seniors run into a fall or illness and come to a complete standstill. Their attitudes became negative. They accepted defeat and only made half-hearted attempts to recover.

We are start at the same point every day

No matter what our current situation is. Each morning we may face new financial expectations, or health challenges, family difficulties, or exciting prospects. Life goes up and down, and it may look like a great day, or a not so good one at first glance. But, in the process, we make our own choice to see the day as positive or negative. Along the way, that attitude may do a lot to influence the day’s results.

One lady mentioned in the article had multiple sclerosis. If you have seen what MS does, you know what this lady faces daily. When the researchers asked her how she fashions her life she said she sees herself as vibrant and happy, and over time that has become a reality. She called it “a wellness persona.”

I think we could all learn a lot from that lady. Just looking around at the positives and heading in that direction every morning, might be the best possible choice we could make for our health. It could even lead to a whole string of better days.
