Treatment Options for Migraines
By Randi Morse
As somebody who has been forced to deal with migraines for well over a decade, I completely understand how others who have the same condition feel. Migraines can vary in severity. Sometimes they are mild and you can go about your daily business by avoiding bright lights and taking a lot of over-the-counter pain relievers. Other times they are completely devastating, requiring you to stay in your bed, in a darkened room, until the pain is alleviated. Migraines can be caused by a number of things, making it difficult for doctors to thoroughly treat. There are, however, a couple of options for those who are looking to get rid of, or severely lessen, migraines.
Botox
When you hear the word "botox" you likely think of celebrities, or the very wealthy, who use Botox injections to tighten their faces, making them appear more youthful. Botox has been found to be somewhat helpful for those who suffer from chronic migraines. Botox injections contain botulinum neurotoxin. This neurotoxin changes the release of neurotransmitters in the brain cells. It is this feature of Botox that makes it a potential treatment option for someone struggling with migraines. There are some caveats about this treatment. Anytime your skin is pierced, such as when you have an injection, there is a risk for infection. Botox can also cause muscle weakness or paralysis, and doesn't do anything to change the underlying condition that caused the migraine in the first place.
Chiropractic
The ability of a chiropractor to help mend bones, joints, ligaments, and muscles is well-known. What many people don't realize, however, is that chiropractic can be amazing for people who suffer from headaches and migraines. Migraines can be caused by joint restriction. These joint restrictions in the neck or spine severely impact the central nervous system, which can then lead to severe migraines. Chiropractors can use gentle manipulation to release and repair the joint restriction, stopping the migraines in their tracks.
