Show Someone You Care With a Hug for Their Health

By Tom Herrin

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that people often respond well to hugs.  It is very natural. Children seek as many as they can get as frequently as possible.  Most of the time, the little ones are pretty huggable anyway. As they get bigger, either they tend to shun huggers or the huggers get more frustrated with them.  Believe it or not, people never really get too big or too old for hugs, they just see themselves that way. Hugging has been helping people’s health for years. There is nothing that has changed that now.  A little more hugging is sure to improve any relationship.

Hugs Can Provide Comfort From Fears

Everyone knows that when people are afraid, the natural response from others is to hug them.  This has a real effect on their confidence. Many times, the greatest fears tend to be those of the unknown.  Insecurity about how to deal with a fear or problem can disrupt any feelings people can have about control of their own lives.  A hug may help someone feel that they are not alone in their fears, and that another person shares the same feelings and can relate.

Hugs May Relieve Stress

All people have stress at one time or another.  It may be brought on by all kinds of things. Some of the causes are relationships, school, work, finances, and a host of other things.  Stress can virtually wreck a person’s health. Its toll can cause sleeplessness, illness, and all sorts of other things. A simple hug may help to make a person feel that all is not so bad.  A hug can reduce the amount of the hormone that causes stress in the body.

All Ages Need Hugs

We usually think of children as being in the greatest need of hugs.  They do need a lot, but older people can use hugs as well. Many times, our older friends and relatives are somewhat ignored as to their needs for affection and affirmation.  How many times have you seen an older person when you preferred to avoid them? Too many times, people steer away from them as if they had some kind of plague.  I enjoy making an effort to speak to them, especially when they seem distant and alone. It can be a remarkably rewarding experience to speak to an older person and see their surprise that someone cares.  They may carry on an informative conversation. A touch or hug can do even more. Try it, and make a difference in someone’s life.
