Personal Commitment May Help Manage Blood Pressure

By Tom Herrin

Some people complain that they wish there was something they could do about various health problems.  Then they proceed to go about their regular activities taking no more thought about the subject.  When they are told they may need to begin taking medication to manage something such as high blood pressure, they wish again they could do something about it.  In reality, most people do a lot of wishing but don't really want to make any changes in their everyday routine or activities.  Much of the time, those who get serious and make some of those changes can take control of their own health and avoid those medications.

Eat Healthier

It is pretty easy to fall into a trap of eating poorly these days.  So many people are busy and have very little time during the day so they end up relying on fast foods for their basic nutrition.  It isn't all bad, but it is easy to make choices.  If people will become a little better at reading menus and labels, they will be able to make better decisions.  They can easily cut a lot of the bad fats and salts from their diets by being more aware.  Even most fast food restaurants have healthier choices.  Making decisions in advance can help.

Let Other Share Your Worries

It isn't that people should dump their problems on those around them, but many others are quite capable of making decisions.  All they may need is an opportunity to do so and a little information as to what is expected.  Lifting some of those worries may ease the mental and emotional strain.  This may go a long way toward lowering blood pressure.  One may be surprised at how much they inflict stress on themselves without intending to do so.

Stay Informed

A big portion of taking personal ownership of health is having more information.  I like to keep tabs on my health as much as possible.  I check my blood pressure with a home monitor.  It helps me to see if I need to make adjustments, which happens on occasion.  I have to keep a steady watch on my health and make changes.  I have found that, if I ignore it, I get into trouble in a hurry.  Being on the lookout at all times works best for me.  The result is that I am able to enjoy generally good health most of the time.
