Major Minerals You Need
By Sara Butler
Your body needs a variety of vitamins and minerals to stay healthy, but do you know which are the most important? Minerals play a major role in all your body’s processes, from helping it to balance fluids to building strong teeth and bones. Even your nervous system requires minerals for optimal function. Understanding what minerals are important and where you can get them is vital to your continued health and wellness. Here’s what you need to know!
The Major Minerals
If you eat a balanced and healthy diet, then it’s not too difficult to supply your body with what it needs. You should make sure to get these major minerals to stay healthy:
You surely have heard of calcium before and know it plays a role in building strong teeth and bones. But what you may not know is that you need calcium in order for your muscles and nervous system to function and for your blood to clot.
Calcium can be found in:
- Fortified foods
- Leafy green vegetables
Your body needs magnesium in order to control nerve impulses and muscle contractions. You also need it to help regulate blood pressure, maintain healthy bones, and control blood sugar. It’s quite uncommon to be deficient in magnesium, but it can happen.
You can find magnesium in a variety of foods, such as:
- Whole grains
- Dark green vegetables
Chloride may be a mineral you’re not as familiar with. It’s important to get enough because it helps your body produce gastric juices essential to digestive functions. It also works hand in hand with sodium to help keep the fluid in your body balanced.
Table salt is a great source of chloride, along with vegetables such as tomatoes and celery.
This mineral works with chloride to maintain fluid balance in your body, but it also is important for regulating blood pressure. Too much sodium can cause health problems too, so there’s no reason to supplement it. It’s found naturally in many different foods but is most prevalent in processed foods, so you probably need to make sure you’re not getting too much rather than not enough!
This mineral is important to normal cell function and bone growth. It works in conjunction with B vitamins to create energy your body can use from the food you eat.
You can find phosphorus in foods such as nuts, seeds, legumes, and meats.
Potassium is required by your body for normal function of the central nervous system as well as muscle contractions. Your body also needs it to help regulate blood pressure.
You can find potassium naturally in:
A diet full of these nutrients will help you achieve optimal health and wellness!
