6 Ways to Enhance Your Eye Health
By Brandi Goodman
Cataract Awareness Month in June encourages people to learn better ways to care for their eyes. Cataracts often develop due to aging. The tissue in the lens of the eye changes. Maintaining the overall health of your eyes can help to prevent aging from taking its toll on your vision.
Improve Your Diet
The food you eat may have a significant impact on your eye health. Improve your diet by starting with small changes. Add in more fruits and vegetables and drink water each day. Carrots, sweet potatoes, salmon, eggs, kale, spinach, and almonds are all foods with lots of vitamins and nutrients essential for good vision.
Protect Your Eyes From Light
Both natural and artificial light can do damage to the eyes if you aren't careful. It's important to protect your eyes from all forms of light. This includes taking a break from looking at device screens, wearing sunglasses when you're outdoors, and avoiding looking directly at the sun.
See an Eye Doctor
You should have your vision checked at an eye doctor every one or two years. A doctor who specializes in vision will be able to notify you of early signs of eye damage, cataracts, or macular degeneration. Anytime you experience severe eye pain, seeing spots, or other issues, it is also advised to make an appointment.
Exercise
Getting enough exercise can improve your vision as well. High cholesterol and high blood pressure both impact vision. Maintaining a healthy weight and keeping these numbers in check can, in turn, keep the eyes safe from harm caused by these sorts of problems.
Stop Smoking
Smoking can cause cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, dry eye syndrome, and more. If you stop smoking, you significantly reduce your chances of developing these eye issues and keeping your sight in tact. You can speak with your doctor about methods for quitting that may work for you.
Sleep
Enough sleep each night can also keep your eyes working well. If you don't sleep enough you may find yourself rubbing your eyes a lot throughout the day as you struggle to keep them open. This can cause damage to your eyes if you're not careful. Making sure you get adequate sleep from one night to the next can help ensure your vision stays.
Do what you can to enhance your eye health and prevent aging from causing damage to your sight. Numerous methods exist for keeping your eyes healthy. Try as many as you feel comfortable with to enhance your vision as much as possible.
