How to Make the Most of Every Day

By Sandy Schroeder

Most of us are thankful that we can move ahead with more activity and new freedom. Now it may just be a question of what to do first. That's a great opportunity and we should make the most of it

Many researchers are suggesting a three-pronged approach for everyone. Stay active, look for new avenues and shed stress as you go.

If you can relate, you may have a lot of pent-up stress that you need to release. Here are a few ways to let all of that tension go.

Try a new activity each week - Talk with family and friends and start planning some weekend excursions. Short drives, all-day biking, camping and wilderness hikes could work to get everyone going. Or learn a new sport with your child and spend some time practicing during the week.

Shed stress as you go - If you and your family have fallen into a groove of sitting all day and then landing on the couch in the evening, it's time to try some new things.

Let some laughter in - Break out your favorite funny movies and pass the popcorn. Laughter relaxes the body and lifts the spirit.

Use your breath to regroup - Whenever you feel sad or anxious, step away and find a quiet spot. Close your eyes, sit quietly and breathe deeply concentrating on your breath. As you inhale and exhale, all of that tension can drop back.

Turn up the tunes - Keep your favorite guitar, jazz or songs playing to set the mood and lift your spirit.

Get outside - Early in the morning, after lunch or later in the evening, short walks with your dog and your kids will put everything into a more positive perspective.

Stay active and enjoy the difference - Researchers tell us staying active may be one of the most important habits that we can and should establish. Think about your day and pick natural spots to get outside and get moving. When your activities feel as natural as brushing your teeth, you may have won the battle. Making exercise a natural part of every day will pay off with lower weight, lower blood pressure, more energy and better moods. Here are some ways to go.

  • Do early morning runs
  • Add stretches to your workday with hourly breaks
  • Try a new yoga or tai chi class
  • Bike more and drive less
  • Always use the stairs
  • Making walking a daily must
  • Join an active group that hikes or bikes
  • Find a workout buddy for support
  • Get your kids involved and help them practice
  • Volunteer to help with your kids' soccer or basketball games.

The more activities you generate, the more ways you will find to stay active.
