Lose the Baggage and Get Back to Health

Well, we did it! We made it through another summer and now it’s back to business. The late nights and late mornings have come to an end, and the frenzied, panic look on parents’ faces are just starting to begin. Many of us aren’t ready for this season of activity to start yet, because we all know that just as quickly as the start of school snuck up on us, so will everything else that follows ... teacher conferences, sports, recitals, school breaks … in fact, I bet some even have family members discussing holiday plans already, am I right?

Summer Leftovers

This seems to be the hardest time of year for transitioning, doesn’t it? I’m not really sure why, but perhaps it’s because we’re carrying the leftover baggage from summer living. We may be sleep-deprived, we may be unfocused, and we may even be carrying around a few extra pounds from all of those weekend barbecues our friends hosted, but we certainly don’t have the time or energy to continue carrying those bags around with us. So let’s get those bags checked in and get busy! Here are some simple steps on how to reboot your health.

  • Increase your water intake - To function properly, your body needs water, so drink it. Then drink some more. Consuming adequate amounts of water will help with weight loss, pain management, brain and organ function, fatigue, and poor immunity. It will also bring your energy back, which may be exactly what you need the most at this point.
  • Get moving - Just do it. Exercise is key to living a healthy lifestyle and you can do it anywhere, so no excuses! Walk more, take the stairs, chase your toddlers, head to the gym. You can do it! It only takes a few minutes out of your day and it can be accomplished with little to no equipment. Just move. It’s the only way to get on the path to good health.
  • Add some daily happy moments - What are some of the little things that bring you a moment of pleasure or sanity? For me, it’s when I can listen to my own music without having a child constantly try to change the station. Or a great cup of coffee mid-afternoon ... by myself. Whatever it is for you, add it to your day. Add a couple if you must. Just get those moments in, so you can keep the insanity of the world out.
  • Reboot your nutrition - No more weekly rib parties with drinks and desserts on the side. It’s time to get back to serious meal planning with healthy foods and snacks for everyone.

Losing the Baggage

It happens to the best of us; we show up carrying extra baggage. But when life turns this busy, it’s time to put those bags away so you can lose that frenzied look on your face, reboot your health, and relax. You got this!
