How to Outsmart Your Allergies
By Sara Butler
Allergy season is here -- but has it ever really left? That’s a question for another time. What needs to be focused on in the present is how you can negate the impact of allergies on your life with the help of chiropractic care! Here’s what you should know about seasonal allergies and how the chiropractors at The Joint may be able to help!
What Causes Allergies?
Allergies are your body’s response to things in the environment. The biggest allergy offenders tend to be pet dander, grass, mold, pollen, and dust. Your body’s reaction leaves you feeling stuffy and miserable.
How can chiropractic care help? Your nervous system controls every aspect of the way your body functions. Chiropractic care helps to ensure your central nervous system is working at its very best, free from joint dysfunction and restriction that can interrupt the signals between your brain and the rest of your body -- including your immune system. When your body can function unimpeded, then allergy symptoms can lessen or even go away.
Some Other Tips
To help you win the fight against your allergies, there are a few things recommended by the chiropractors at The Joint, aside from regular chiropractic adjustments. You should:
- Lay low during prime pollen time – The highest pollen counts of the day are usually in the morning and at dusk. If you can stay inside during these times, then you should.
- Protect yourself – When you are outside, wear protection such as a hat, sunglasses, and even a filtering mask to keep you from breathing in the pollen.
- Drink a lot of water – Dehydration will signal your body to produce histamines, the chemicals that lead to reactions that leave you feeling so miserable during allergy season. Drink more water to reduce your histamine levels and reduce inflammation along with it.
- Keep clean – Over the course of the day, you’ll likely come into contact with many different allergens that will then attach to your skin, clothes, and hair. When you get home, take off your clothes and have a quick shower to wash it off you. This should help reduce symptoms.
- Watch what you eat – Some foods can make your allergies worse. Dairy, rice, bread, and pasta can trigger inflammation, so avoid them when your symptoms are at their worst. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to help combat the effects of histamines in your body.
