Finding Natural Relief for Pain

By Randi Morse

Nobody likes to be in pain, but unfortunately it is something that we cannot avoid. At some point in time in your life you are going to be in pain; it may be because of an accident that occurred or it might be because of a chronic, long-term condition, but it's coming your way. Our body is designed to not like pain. Pain tells the body that something is wrong and needs to be fixed, so if it is ignored, the pain will only get worse. This is when it is easy to look to pain medication for relief. Our current opioid epidemic, however, began in part due to people searching for ways to alleviate their pain. If you are trying to get rid of your pain in a more natural way, here are a few options.

Getting Rest

Rest allows your body to heal. It allows the white and red blood cells to do what they do, to carry the antibodies and proteins your muscles and tendons need for repair to reach the places they need to reach. If the pain is in one of your limbs, elevating that limb a bit can help speed along the repair process. You may also find that simply sitting still and getting rest is much less painful than moving around. That's because it's your body's way of telling you to stay put for a bit.

Moving Around

While getting rest is important, being too sedentary can be a bad thing. Sitting around for too long can make your body stiff, which may make the pain worse once you get up and start moving around again. There's a delicate balance to be found when it comes to dealing with pain, getting enough rest while also getting enough movement. A good rule of thumb is to get up and move around, as much as your pain allows you to, every few hours.

Chiropractic Care

A great, natural way to manage pain is with chiropractic care. Joint restrictions and dysfunctions along the spine can be a huge source of pain for the body, and chiropractors are trained to use gentle manipulation to help repair these restrictions. Pain in your hand, for example, may actually be caused by something that's occurring along the spine.
