How to Break the Exercise Monotony

By Genevieve Cunnigham

Exercise is so good for the body. It builds muscle and burns fat. It stimulates metabolism and makes you feel good about yourself. There’s no reason to skip it! Of course, so many of us do. We skip the exercise because we don’t have time or we lack motivation. And even when we manage to pick up a routine, it gets monotonous and we quit. So how do we break the cycle? Take a look at these tips for breaking the exercise monotony and feeling better than ever.

Try Something New

Never underestimate the power of something new. If you currently run or walk, try a fun class. If you’re already in a class, try a new one, or go do something all on your own. Changing it up is one of the biggest keys to staying motivated and interested. It will break the monotony for both your body and mind, and you’ll be much more likely to stick with your routine over a long period of time.

Get an Awesome Playlist

Music is incredibly motivating. It has the power to completely transform the way that you feel and your entire frame of mind. If your playlist is old and stale, it’s possible that it’s holding you back in your fitness quest. Get something new … something that makes you feel powerful and upbeat and ready to go. Or make a few playlists that accompany certain workouts or certain moods. The better your music, the better your workout and your motivation is likely to be.

Change Venues

If you’re really having trouble, try changing the scenery. If you’re a gym rat, take it outside. If you work out outdoors, take it in a gym. Seeing something different might give you different ideas or different motivation. It can completely change the way that you feel about your workout, even if you’re performing the same old moves. Even just a few days somewhere new can make a world of difference, so don’t be afraid to give it a try.

Your exercise motivation is important. When it gets too monotonous or boring, it’s really tough to not give up. Use these tips to keep it interesting and to break any boredom before it destroys your routine. With a little luck and some perseverance, you can make it through the monotony and reach your goals in no time.
