Improve Your Life With Self-Defense Training

By Paul Rothbart

There are several reasons why people consider taking a self-defense class. You may live or work in a shady neighborhood where the need to defend yourself is a likely occurrence. Some people are inspired by martial arts films starring Jackie Chan, or if you're as old as I am, Bruce Lee. It may simply be a matter of physical fitness. Whatever the reason, those people get more benefits from their training than they may realize. Self-defense classes can improve your life in several ways.

Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is necessary to be successful in any aspect of life. Martial arts and self-defense training are first and foremost about discipline. They require dedication to the training, practicing new skills, and being regular in class attendance. Without practice, you won't improve and in improving, you are building self-discipline without even realizing it. This level of dedication and commitment can become a part of you and carry over into other areas of your life.

Confidence

No one accomplishes anything significant without believing in themselves. Self-defense training naturally builds confidence. You learn skills that require physical agility and mental focus. Learning each new move shows you how much you are capable of. You also tend to feel safer in many situations, knowing that you are ready and able to take care of yourself. Confidence is contagious and will stay with you in your job and personal life.

Physical Fitness

Self-defense training is a form of exercise. It can strengthen and tone muscle, improve your cardiovascular system, and increase stamina. If you dedicate yourself to the training, you can't help but get into better shape. A more fit body is a more healthy body. Anything that improves your health is worth doing.

Balance

Balance is essential to success as well. This can mean actual physical balance or the ability to keep your attention distributed on more than one thing at a time. In self-defense, you must focus on your adversary while also being aware of your body and its movement. This all happens in seconds in real-time. The ability to keep track of more than one thing at a time is an aspect of balance that is of great value in life.

Situational Awareness

Staying alert and aware of your surroundings is also valuable. Self-defense training teaches you to be on your guard at all times. This is certainly helpful on the street where you may be attacked, but also in the office or in situations where staying a step ahead of others can give you an edge.

Self-defense or martial arts training can help you feel safe in many situations. But there are other benefits that make it a worthwhile pursuit. Learning to defend oneself is something that can help everyone.
