How to Show Your Spine Some Love

By Sara Butler

Most people don't think about their spines nearly enough. Sure, it may be all you can think about if you pull a muscle or suffer from low back pain, but until that happens, how much love do you show your spine on a daily basis? Truth is, it could use more.

Back pain is the biggest cause of disability in the entire world and Americans of all ages are suffering from back pain or other issues related to spinal health. It's time to think about prevention, which is why the chiropractors at The Joint have come up with a few ways you can show your spine little love today.

Think About Posture

Posture is something you should have on your mind all day, not simply when your grandmother reminds you of it. Sitting in a hunched, slouched or otherwise awkward position impacts more than how you look -- it also impacts the health of your spine. Over time, these poor posture habits can lead to reduced flexibility and mobility as well as discomfort and pain.

The key to practicing good posture is to help your spine maintain its natural curves. This means that your head is up, your ears are over your shoulders, your chest is pushed out and your shoulders are back. If you're sitting, then your feet should be flat on the floor. If you're standing, then your body weight should be distributed on your feet evenly. If you need help understanding how to have proper posture, talk to the chiropractors at The Joint.

Lift Responsibly

Yoda once said, "With great lifting comes great responsibility." Or something along those lines. At any rate, it's important to remember a proper technique when lifting something too or you may cause an injury to your back.

When lifting, bend at your knees, using the power of your legs and hips to lift. Keep your back straight and hold the object you're lifting as close to your body as possible. If you're lifting something really heavy, ask for help -- though this technique is important to use no matter what you're lifting. Even a bag from the grocery store can cause problems if lifted incorrectly.

Don't wait until something goes wrong to take care of yourself. Show your body some love everyday with the help of the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic!
