Exercises You Can Do Your Whole Life

By Sara Butler

From Jazzercise to Zumba, there’s never a shortage when it comes to trends in the fitness world. You don’t have to do anything fancy to get back into regular exercise or to keep exercising well into your golden years, all you must do is keep it simple. Here are some simple exercises that everyone should do, no matter their age or fitness level.

Walking

Walking is something you mastered when you were one, so it may not seem like it counts as exercise -- but it does! You don’t need a gym and it’s practical since it gets you where you want to go both literally and figuratively. Plus, walking is a great form of exercise for people of all ages. It reduces your risk of high blood pressure and premature death. So, trap on those walking shoes and get going!

Squats

Squats can make your legs feel wobbly, like Jell-O. If that’s the case, then you probably need to do more of them!

Squats help to strengthen your legs and help to prevent hip, knee, ankle, and lower back injuries. They help to increase balance and flexibility and enhance communication between your muscles and your brain. There’s even evidence that squats help to improve the distribution of fluid and nutrients to your organs, glands, and tissues -- especially in the lower half of your body.

Swimming

Swimming is a great exercise for people of all ages. It provides a wonderful cardiovascular workout and also helps to strengthen muscles and protect joints. It’s also a low-impact exercise, which makes it a great alternative when you’re nursing an injury or need an exercise that is easy on your joints.

Push-ups

Many people view push-ups as an exercise for the arms, but it’s really an exercise for your entire body. It works your core muscles, arms, and legs, which makes them worth adding to your exercise plan. If they’re new to you and too challenging, try using a wall and perform them while standing or put your knees down and perform them that way.

Planks

Planks are another great full body exercise. They work to help build strength in your arms, shoulders, back, and core. They also help to improve your posture and balance, strengthen your lower body, and can even help to reduce lower back pain.
