Keep it Cool During Summer
By Donna Stark
Just because the first day of school is right around the corner, it doesn't mean that the hot days of summer are on their way out. More than likely, you can still count on having several more weeks of high temperatures, and if you or your children are going to be spending any significant time outdoors, you will need to stay cool. Here are some great tips that don't include hibernating inside your air-conditioned home.
Drink Plenty of Water
If you are outside in the heat, you are going to sweat, and guess what sweat is? That's right it's your body's air conditioner. If you don't have enough water in your system (dehydration), your body heat will stay trapped and your core temperature can rise. So stay cool, and replace what your body is losing while it sweats! The best way to do that is to drink the recommended amount of water each day.
Dress Appropriately
Choosing the right clothes when you get dressed is an important part of staying cool when temperatures rise! But what are the "right kind" of clothes? You should look for lightweight and light-colored clothing made out of natural fabrics. Loose-fitting clothes are also a good option as they provide better airflow and hats are perfect for protecting the top of your head.
Eat Differently
It's something you do at least three times a day and it can have a profound effect on how well you can stay cool. Here are some suggestions on what to eat in the summertime.
- Cold salads, sandwiches, and beverages in place of hot meals and drinks
- Spicy foods that make you sweat (remember, sweating is your body's way to cool down)
- Water-rich foods, such as watermelon, cantaloupes, and cucumbers
Cool Your Neck
Is your child melting out there on the soccer field? Are you melting while watching the game? If so, cool down with a cold cloth placed on your neck. Wrapping a cloth or small towel that has been dampened with cold water around your neck is one of the best cooling techniques around. And it's easy to keep for games! Simply throw it in the cooler of water bottles you packed and pull it out when needed. When it dries, just dampen it again.
Enjoy Summer Again
There is no reason to let the high temperatures of summer keep you inside and away from all the action! If you find yourself grimacing at the thought of being outdoors, take heart! With just a few simple changes to how you go about your day, you can keep your body cool and continue enjoying all of the outdoor activities you love!
