Remembering May Be Easier When Eating Blueberries
By Tom Herrin
It is not uncommon for any of us to fall into a rut. We do it with our daily routine all of the time. Our eating patterns tend to be the same as well. When I was young, if we had ham on Sunday, we may have it every Sunday for the next two months. What do you have with it? The odds are that there is some kind of corn or potatoes, maybe green beans sometimes. They may sound appealing, but after a while, it gets a little old. What is more significant than that is what is missing. There is a need for some of the things offered by fruits. When people include blueberries in a diet, they may be moving to another level of healthy foods.
They Are Loaded with Nutrients
Fruits are known for being generally low in calories and high in their level of nutrients. Blueberries seem to top the list in several of these. A one cup serving is only 84 calories while it contains 4 grams of fiber. It also has 24 percent of the RDA for Vitamin C, 36 percent of Vitamin K, and 25 percent of manganese. Since they are about 85 percent water, with the fiber, they do a great job of helping food to move along through the digestive system.
They May Be the Best Source of Antioxidants Among Fruits
Blueberries are pretty well known for their content of antioxidants. These are recognized for their disease fighting abilities, both communicable and non-communicable. They seem to have some abilities to reduce or help prevent some cancers. These antioxidants appear to help reduce inflammation as well. This includes that which affects the blood vessels, contributing to high blood pressure. That also adds up to possibly less likelihood of heart damage.
They May Help Slow Effect of Aging
Much of the problems people have with aging is related to the condition of the DNA material in the body; as this material breaks down, it does not reproduce cells as well. The idea of breaking down, or wearing out, is often actually tied to DNA material. If the cells can reproduce effectively, those cells will be able to function at their best. Aging is thus delayed. We can actually feel more youthful because we are in a sense. If you haven’t had them in a while, pick up some blueberries and give them a try.
