Enjoy the Sun but Put Some Protection Between You

By Tom Herrin

Living here in Texas has some pretty good perks.  It may not seem that way when we see overcast skies, but we know the sun is always there waiting to appear.  We are pretty fortunate in that we can enjoy it a lot more days than not. There are plenty of opportunities to go outdoors at almost any time.  While this is a great way to live, it also has its share of risks. There are certainly more sun-related issues people have to deal with. Extended periods of time in the sun can lead to a variety of problems.  Using some sort of protection is really a necessity.

Finding Shade Is Cheap

One of the best things to do in order to get protection from the sun is try to use shade wisely.  It may be a little hard to find at times, but those who find it need to use it wisely. Whether it is working or playing, doing so in the shade can help to protect people from dangerous UV rays and heat.  Many oldtimers used shade when they worked. A painter, for example, might use the shade to their advantage while working. They would paint on the west side of the house in the morning, take a break at noon, and then work on the east side of the house in the afternoon.  This would maximize the shade and minimize the risk from the sun.

Sunscreen Is Now Standard

While many people ignored sunscreen for years, many others are wising up to the fact that it is important.  Using it often is almost like buckling up when people get into a car. Those midday rays can do a lot of harm in a hurry.  Applying and reapplying may save skin from aging, cancer, and several other things. It is an essential that should be carried at all times, regardless of the season.  After all, Texas doesn’t really have seasons except just hot and hotter.

Wear a Hat

I was never a hat wearer when I was younger.  Since I have had my share of skin cancers, I have learned that hats are quite nice.  The right one can protect you from the sun and the heat. Caps fail to protect the neck, so have a hat with a brim all the way around.  My wife wears a sort of sombrero. It does a good job. I usually wear a Panama. They are actually pretty comfortable. Find one you like and wear it often.  I like to carry a spare.
