Compression Apparel May Squeeze Out Better Health

By Tom Herrin

Many years ago, the standard wear for exercising was sweats or some other loose-fitting clothes.  The downside was that they often became heavy with perspiration and were pretty bulky. Modern workout apparel has come a long way.  The recent craze seems to be compression wear. It can be seen almost everywhere on just about everyone. Whether it is men, women, or children, it may show up in all kinds of places.  It is now so widespread in its use that it has almost become accepted as casual wear. That is not to say that it no longer has a place in the gym or on the track, but its usefulness has grown due to its versatility.

The Socks Are a Real Success

Compression socks have been used for quite a few years in hospitals and other health facilities.  They are particularly useful for those who have had surgery or some other procedure. When people are laid up, or inactive for a period of time, blood flow may be interrupted.  The lack of movement in the body can result in pooling of blood in areas that are greater distances from the heart. This can increase the risk of dangerous blood clot. Pressure applied by the socks can help to force the blood back to the heart, improving circulation.

Tops Are Becoming More Popular

A walk through just about any general clothing store will reveal plenty of compression-style shirts.  Some people enjoy wearing them after a workout feeling that the shirt may help reduce swelling. Others enjoy wearing them during a workout to provide some support and comfort along with good airflow.  They are lightweight and comfortable.

The Shorts Have Become Accepted as Casual Wear

People all over may be seen wearing the shorts for all kinds of activities.  I have seen parents wear them at school with their kids as well as at the local grocery store.  They may be really popular for workouts because they are simply comfortable. They appear to be a favorite with those who ride bicycles.  I enjoy wearing them anytime I feel I need support in an activity. I have even worn them underneath my jeans when I was riding a horse. They helped to prevent excess moisture from being a problem, and I had no saddle-soreness.  If you haven’t really embraced them yet, pick up some and enjoy the lightweight comfort.
