Stop These Unhealthy Eating Habits Now

We all have our vices. Some people smoke, some people drink… I eat Flaming Hot Cheetos. It’s easy to fall into these bad habits, especially with food.

Food is something we need to survive, so it’s not like you can quit eating. That is why it is so important to understand unhealthy eating and drinking habits. If you can recognize these debilitating food patterns, then you can stop them. Here are a few eating habits that you should stop partaking in today in order to have a healthier relationship with food.

  1. Too much alcohol can cause over-eating. Not only are there a significant amount calories in the alcoholic beverages themselves, but that coupled with the extra food intake can create a calorie bomb bigger than you might realize. Try to keep this combo in check by limiting late night drinks, as well as keeping track of the number of cocktails you enjoy with dinner on a daily basis.

  2. Ditch the diet food. Most of these low-cal frozen meals, diet shakes and protein bars are packed with preservatives, added sugar and other additives unrecognizable to the body. These chemically modified foods are not only lacking in nutrients, but they usually don’t fill you up. This leads to snacking in-between meals and after dinner, resulting in eating more calories than you would have eaten if you had just made a healthy dinner with whole foods.

  3. Just because it is healthy doesn’t mean you can eat as much as you want. Even if you are eating nutritious meals you should still practice portion control. Over eating anything will pack on pounds, even if it’s great stuff like oatmeal, avocado and dried fruit. Moderation is key.

  4. When it comes to eating, timing is everything. Don’t skip meals, don’t snack and don’t eat late at night. It is proven that when you eat your calories is just as important as the calories themselves. If you don’t eat during the hours of the day you are most active your body will hold on to those calories more to make up for the lack of food. Eating at night when you are more sedentary will increase weight gain, because your body stores the fat cells that aren’t being used.

  5. Don’t be afraid of fat. Even though it seems logical to think that eating fatty foods will make you fat, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Now, don’t interpret this as an excuse to eat pizza and cheeseburgers every day, I am talking about plant-based fats. Avocado, coconut and olive oil and nuts are all examples of healthy fats that will actually boost your metabolism, keep your stomach full and maintain a lean physique. Plant fats are also successful anti-inflammatories and a good source of antioxidants.
