Mind Your Maple: Benefits of the Organic Syrup

By Brandi Swieter

Sugar has long been used as a sweetener for beverages, desserts, and more. Though it may enhance the taste, it also adds far too many unhealthy elements to the mix. Maple syrup is an alternative solution that sweetens food and drinks without the disadvantages. Many benefits exist when an organic version is utilized.

Manganese

Organic maple syrup contains a hefty dose of manganese. This nutrient is necessary for helping to regulate blood sugar. It may also reduce inflammation and improve bone health. Sugar does not provide any manganese because the refining process it goes through destroys it.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants are necessary for reducing inflammation, slowing signs of aging on the skin, and fighting off Disease within the body. The darker versions of syrup contain the most antioxidants. More than 20 polyphenols and other antioxidant versions exist within organic maple syrup.

Reducing Inflammation

Due to both the antioxidants and manganese found in maple syrup, people can experience a major reduction in inflammation within their bodies. This can mean preventing heart disease and lessening the pain associated with arthritis. Many chronic conditions can be prohibited because of this. On the opposite end, processed foods and sugar are known to cause inflammation and pain.

Healing Skin Conditions

It may seem strange, but raw maple syrup can help to heal some skin conditions. Consuming it isn't necessary to get these benefits. Instead, the sweetener substitute can be applied directly to the skin. Mixing it with oats or honey may be best to ensure optimal results. It can relieve dryness, eliminate redness, and provide hydration.

No Processing

The simple fact that organic maple syrup does not undergo a processing treatment is all the extra benefit a person needs to switch from sugar. It is unrefined and safe to consume. Sugar, on the other hand, goes through a lengthy process that alters its true form. The man-made process can have worse consequences than one would believe. Processed foods have many chemicals and ingredients added that are less than ideal for the body.

Pure maple syrup has its advantages. Use it in place of sugar in recipes and enjoy a healthier existence overall. Be sure to mind the maple you're choosing though. Only organic versions are right to use. The typical store offerings have added sugar that defeats the purpose.
