Chiropractic Advice for Fireworks Viewing

By Brandi Goodman

Fireworks are common to see throughout the summer. The big 4th of July show takes place early in the month and other events close out their night with a special fireworks viewing. All of this sitting staring up at the sky can be bad for the neck and back if people aren't careful. Follow some chiropractic advice for fireworks viewing to make the most of the occasion and leave without feeling aches and pains.

Lay Down to Watch

Sitting up and then tilting the neck back to be able to see into the sky can leave you with neck pain. It may be better to lay down to watch them so that you don't have to do any tilting or turning. It will keep your body straight and prevent straining. Just be sure to lay down on a quilted blanket or in a comfortable space on the grass that has no bumps or uneven patches.

Bring an Adjustable Lawn Chair

You can still sit up if you want, but do so in an adjustable chair. Some lawn chairs tilt back and allow you to sit in a reclined position. This prevents you from having to hold your neck in place as you watch the sky, which can keep the pain away. It may feel more comfortable to sit in a chair like this than to lay down among strangers.

Keep Kids Off Your Shoulders

Lots of parents give their kids a better view by hoisting them up onto their shoulders. You should really keep your kids off your shoulders as this can cause pain quickly. Have them lay down with you or sit them in your lap as you recline in your chair so you can both view the fireworks without a problem.

Stretch Before the Show

Stretching is always beneficial for the body. Stretch before the show so you can have better mobility and prevent injury or aches. It's best to stretch out your back and neck since these are the two most common areas affected when watching fireworks shooting off in the sky. Tilt your neck forward slowly and then back. Roll it to one side and then the other. Press your shoulder blades back and release. These small movements can go a long way toward keeping your neck relaxed.

Visit a Chiropractor Afterward

The clinic may not be open for a visit immediately following the show, but you should be able to go the next day. Visit a chiropractor after a night of fun and fireworks to be sure any joint restrictions or subluxations that it caused can be removed. It may help to loosen up the body and prevent stiffness that the viewing caused. The Joint Chiropractic offers weekend and walk-in hours for convenience.
