Realistic Healthy Eating Rules

By Sara Butler

There’s a ton of information out there about what you should eat and what you shouldn’t, when you should eat it, and how much of it you can have. With all the rules out there geared toward helping people achieve and maintain a healthy weight, it’s no wonder that many people start healthy eating regimens they simply can’t sustain. Here are a few healthy eating rules that are realistic and will help you stay on track.

Rule No. 1: No Food Should Really be Off-Limits

One of the best things you can do for yourself is not to label any food as truly off-limits. You must allow room for all types of foods in your diet, especially foods you enjoy eating. Whether that’s cupcakes or kale salad, the key to any long-term health strategy is balance. Should you eat a cupcake for lunch every day? Probably not. But you can have a cupcake in between two balanced and healthy meals.

Just remember that there’s no one-size-fits-all plan for everyone. You must find what works for you. Start by identifying one food you really love -- whether it’s healthy or not. Next, think about three different ways you can incorporate that food into your balanced diet in a way that won’t leave you feeling guilty.

Rule No. 2: Prioritize Eating Healthy -- Most of the Time!

Judge yourself on nutrition and health by what you do most of the time -- not what you do all of the time. Are you trying to a eat nutritious and balanced diet that you combine with movement and exercise? If it’s all good for the most part, then you’re doing well!

The key to sustaining any long-term health plan is not to burn yourself out or drive yourself insane as you strive for perfection. There will be days you watch Netflix instead of going for a jog -- and that’s OK as long as it’s not every day.

Rule No. 3: Create Your Own Definition of Health

Scrolling through social media and seeing how on-point some of your friends are with their health and wellness goals can be a real bummer, but it’s important to remember you are not them. You must be able to define your health for yourself. If you hate green smoothies or yoga, that’s OK. Optimal health is a personal thing. You can only be you, so don’t try to be someone else.

You can be successful if you keep your goals realistic!
