Cold season is in full effect and the bad news is that no matter how advanced medicine has become, there's still no cure for the common cold. That means you have to take your health in your own hands when you feel a cold coming on and take steps to head it off at the pass. But which home remedies for colds are winners and which are just a waste of your time? Here are a few of the best and worst natural cold remedies.

Exercise

Should you keep exercising or not when you feel a cold starting to take hold? The consensus is that you should keep on going! Studies have found that moderate exercise when you have a cold can help you to feel better faster and regular exercise can help keep your immune system strong so you may not get that nasty cold in the first place. Just make sure you don't overexert yourself if you're feeling under the weather and stay hydrated.

Sleep

It's understood that people who get less than five hours of sleep on a regular basis have a higher incidence of colds than those who get eight or more hours of sleep per night. The moral of that sleep story? Make sure you get a full night's sleep every night, as your body uses that time to rest and rejuvenate, keeping your immune system strong and colds at bay.

Taking Zinc

Some people think that taking this mineral when they start feeling sick is a great way to avoid illness and there's some truth to that. Studies have found that people who take zinc when they feel ill shorten their illnesses. It's thought that zinc impairs a virus's ability to replicate, so it's worth a shot.

But be careful. Some people who take zinc when ill can become nauseous. You should also avoid nasal sprays with zinc in them since they can damage your nose and impair your sense of smell.

Echinacea

Many studies have found that echinacea has little to no impact on colds. Trials have found that in some cases the length of illness may be shortened, but the results cannot be replicated. If you want to try echinacea anyway, there's no harm in some tea. But if you have allergies to plants you may want to check with your medical care provider first to make sure you won't have an allergic reaction.

A cold will run its course eventually, but if you can do something to shorten it's impact or feel better, then it's worth a shot!
