Kiwi: A Little Exotic, a Lot of Nutrition
By Paul Rothbart
Once considered exotic, the kiwi -- that fuzzy little fruit from New Zealand -- is now commonly available in most markets. Because they are now grown in California as well, fresh kiwi is available year-round. The green flesh tastes sweet with a bit of a tang. The seeds are edible as is the furry peel, although most people toss it outside. Eaten alone or with other fruit, kiwis are delicious. They are also incredibly healthy. Here are some facts about kiwis.
Asthma Treatment
This may seem remarkable, but kiwis can be used to help treat asthma. This is attributed to their high content of Vitamin C and other antioxidants. Research conducted in 2000 discovered that people who ate kiwis regularly received a beneficial effect on respiration. Kiwi may help reduce wheezing in children who are prone to asthma.
Immune System
A single cup of kiwi provides 273 percent of the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C. The effects of this nutrient on the immune system are well known. A study found that kiwi may reduce the risk of the cold and flu. It is particularly effective in older adults and small children.
Helps Digestion
Kiwi fruit is rich in fiber, which boosts digestion. Kiwis also contain an enzyme called actinidin that aids in breaking down protein. Research shows that eating kiwi helps to digest proteins. Another benefit of fiber is that it fills you up, reducing cravings and aiding in weight control.
Keeps Blood Pressure Down
High blood pressure is a common health problem that can lead to many serious issues. Research conducted in 2014 found that eating three kiwis a day was an effective way to lower blood pressure. It proved more effective than eating an apple. Lower blood pressure reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart disease.
Good for Eye Health
Kiwis contain the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin. These nutrients help reduce the risk of macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness. A study found that risk of this eye disease could be reduced by 36 percent by consuming three kiwis each day.
Less Risk of Blood Clots
Blood clots can cause many serious problems and if they travel to the lungs or heart, they can be fatal. The University of Oslo conducted a study in which daily consumption of kiwi was found to lower the risk of blood clots considerably. The effects were similar to taking aspirin each day.
Kiwis are a unique fruit with a distinctive flavor and are commonly available. They also are nutritious and very good for your health. Consider making the little fuzz balls a regular part of your diet.
