Baby Steps to a Healthy Diet

By Donna Stark

Feeling sluggish? Carrying around a few extra pounds? Well, today may not be the day when New Year's resolutions are made, but it is a day when you know changes need to be made. And the changes you are looking at are the ones aimed at your diet because, let's be honest, the diet you are following just isn't working for you, is it? But trying to make sweeping changes to what you are used to can be very overwhelming, so you may want to start off slowly. Remember, you don't need to reach all of your goals in one fell swoop. You are allowed to take baby steps with this new lifestyle.

Making Those Steps Count

You have watched babies take their very first steps, haven't you? It's a little tricky at first, but once they start getting it, there's no stopping them. Am I right? Well, the same can be said about your new diet. Those first few changes may seem difficult, but each one will put you closer to the goal you want to achieve, and when that happens, nothing will stop you either! So, where to begin? Take a look at a few of the suggestions below and get ready to make that first step in the right direction.

  • Replace - It's time to start replacing those processed foods in your pantry and refrigerator with fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains instead. Toss out those chips, crackers, boxes of cereal, canned goods, and frozen meals (or better yet, donate them!) and fill your body with nutrient-dense food items. You can also prep your produce as soon as you bring it home so you don't lose that much-needed convenience factor of grabbing your food and going.
  • Downsize - Sure, it's perfectly OK to fill your plate, but not if your plate is the size of a buffet platter! Portion control is key if you are looking to improve your health or lose weight so be very mindful of how much you are serving yourself. You can even use smaller plates to bring your portions back into line.
  • Aim - Now that you have the perfectly-sized plate, you will want to make sure you fill it up correctly. Aim to fill at least half of your plate with fruit and vegetables and then fill the other half equally with your protein and starch.

Reaching Your Goals

As you start taking these baby steps toward better health, you will surely gain momentum and it won't feel as overwhelming as it does now. Just remember to take your time. You got this and you will reach your goals before you even know it.
