The Real Connection Between Headaches and Chiropractic Care
Everyone has had a headache at some point or another. Whether it is a small headache that lasts nine seconds from brain freeze or an extremely crippling migraine headache that lasts for days, headaches are quite common in all of us.
There are so many different causes of headaches, including dehydration, head trauma, swelling of the brain, aversion to environmental stimuli, and much more. The normal treatment for headaches that is commonly sought after are medications, ranging from acetaminophen, to ibuprofen, to caffeine, and anything else that is available over the counter at the local pharmacy. However, many neglect chiropractic care as an effective method in treating headaches, no matter how often they occur.
Many chiropractors assert that the root cause of many headaches is in the neck rather than the head. The neck is where the cervical spine meets the skull and this is a crucial choke point for musculoskeletal problems. If there is problem with the alignment in the cervical spine that contributes to headaches, there is most likely some sort of interaction between the spinal cord and the misalignment in the spine itself. Even if there is one vertebra that is slightly out of place, the spinal cord and/or other neurons in this area may not be able to communicate, and the manifestation of this lack of communication often occurs as pain.
Spasms of the muscles surrounding the cervical spine may also be a cause of headaches. The spasms in these muscles can result in a degree of compression on the nerves in this area, which can then cause tension headaches. Stress, poor posture, physical trauma, and many other causes contribute to the development of these tension headaches.
With chiropractic care, individuals have the ability to form the best possible layout of their musculoskeletal system in order to avoid headaches of all kinds. Chiropractic adjustment techniques focus on the entire body so they root cause of a headache may have nothing to do with the skull or the brain at all. Either way, individuals may have a true asset in chiropractic care.
