How to Figure Out Who You Are with a Wacky Game
By Sandy Schroeder
In today’s world, the spirit of fun can quickly disappear, but psychologists tell us we might be wise to retrieve it whenever we can. One way to have fun is to play self-discovery with some wacky prompts that may reveal who we are.
To get started, Psychcentral provided this list of comical things to do. Check them out and have a little fun with them.
- Create a cartoon figure of yourself emphasizing your most prominent features
- Look back at your childhood and write a short rhyme about it
- Write a silly song about your socks, scarf or shoes
- Write two rules you really want to break like “Don’t eat dessert for breakfast" or "always eat your veggies”
- Write about something silly that you really love
- Fill in the blank. “If I were a color I would be ______ because ______”
- Complete this thought: “If I were part of nature, I would be _______ because ______”
- Finish this thought: “If I were a food I would be _____ because _______”
- Define “magic” and draw a picture of something magical
- Draw a cartoon figure of you when you are excited and list ways you can use this excitement in your day
- Finish this thought. “If I were a book, I would be _____ because _____”
- Draw yourself as a superhero and list your superpowers
- List things you want to be known for and say why
- Take a picture of something that makes you laugh
- Pull out all of the pens, markers, colored pencils or chalk that you have and doodle with all of them
- Write about your mood right now creating a character who captures that mood
- Complete this sentence: “If I were a tool I would be ___ because _____”
- Chat with your soul and find out what it thinks
- Talk about an invention you would like to invent and what it would do.
When you are finished, look back at your drawings and read through your thoughts of what food, character or book you might like to be. These impromptu responses may give you clues to parts of you that you don’t know very well, or at all.
There are lots of ways to work on discovering who we really are. The same process that works with silly questions and doodles might work by joining new groups, listening to different music, or taking art classes such as sculpture or watercolors. We may surprise ourselves as we discover we love classical music. We may be amazed at how good a sculpture class feels, or how refreshing a new group of people can be.
If self-discovery works for you, keep going and see what it can do for your life at home and at work. The more we know about who we are the more effective we can be.
