Hang on to Your Upper Body Strength With Chiropractic

By Sandy Schroeder

Losing upper-body strength can sneak up on you. One day it's fine. The next day your muscles let you down as you reach up for a dish or bend down to pick up grocery bags. Or maybe you are out on the golf course or on the basketball court when your muscles let you down.

All of that upper body strength is needed for countless daily tasks. Arm, shoulder and chest strength are essential to retain independence and avoid accidents and injuries. If we lose power we may find ourselves struggling through life and in need of help.

In our 30's, muscle mass begins to shrink about 1 to 2 percent per year. At age 60 muscle loss increases to 3 percent per year. If you can relate to a loss of strength, now is the time to do something about it. Chiropractic may be one of the most effective ways to stay strong.

How Chiropractic Helps

The Joint Chiropractic clinic near you staffs a wellness center with licensed chiropractors who can help you. They help people of all ages and sizes find health, wellness and pain solutions every day.

When you come in, bring your questions about upper body strength, and any other concerns. Your chiropractor will explain how improved spinal health can help. The spine allows us to move through our day, and the central nervous system inside provides vital brain-to-body communication. When the spine is healthy, everything works better.

As you evaluate your benefits you may also feel more energy and alertness or sleep better. You may choose weekly 15-minute spinal adjustments to stay at your peak.

At the same time, your chiropractor may help you choose good exercises to boost your upper body strength.

Here is an exercise to try from Harvard Health. As always, check with your doctor before starting new exercises

Overhead lift - Do 8-12 for strength and 6-10 repetitions for power. Rest 30 to 90 seconds between sets

Stand with feet apart, chest up and shoulders back and down. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, palms facing forward, elbows pointed to sides. Slowly raise dumbbells up until arms are extended. Hold. Then slowly lower dumbbells down. Keep abs tight and shoulders back.

Stop by the Joint Chiropractic clinic near you when you are ready to get started. Clinics are open weekends and evenings. Affordable personal healthcare plans eliminate the hassle of insurance. No appointments are needed.
