Making Up for Lost Time
By Sandy Schroeder
If you are like me, you have felt like you were moving through quicksand in the midst of the pandemic. Now as things begin to change, I think we should pick up speed and begin to do many of the things we have been longing to do.
Think about people, places, and events that have been sidetracked, and consider how to make them happen as life improves. Also make a list of things you would like to upgrade in your own life. Here are a few possibilities.
Stay connected - Make the effort to reconnect with those you have missed talking to. Reach out to find out what they are doing. Maintaining connections makes us realize how valuable our people links are. They provide the memories and the caring that makes life worthwhile.
Make outside time happen every day - Lift your spirit and support your exercise routine with time outside. Start the morning with a short walk or a quick run. Eat outside at lunch and sit outside when you take an afternoon break. Whenever you can, spend time outdoors reading, swimming, or dozing in the sun. Outside time will help you sleep better and stay relaxed throughout the day.
Revitalize exercise options - Start with the routines that work for you and add some new ones. Try tai chi or weekend biking or hiking. Work out with the whole family as you run to the park, shoot hoops, or practice soccer. Keep your exercise time flexible so you manage to stay active for at least 30 minutes every day.
Eat to thrive - Treats, sweet snacks and takeout are OK in moderation, but do your best to create a healthy diet that's loaded with fresh fruit, vegetables, fatty fish, lean meats, and poultry. Add olive oil, yogurt, and low fat cheeses as you look for healthy recipes that fit your family.
Look ahead - In the past, before the pandemic, I postponed special trips and other excursions. Now, as the situation changes, I am going to make opportunities happen as they become possible. The pandemic shows us just how quickly things can change.
Work on your attitude - When things are going smoothly, it is easy to expect that to continue. Then it is easy to be bored, impatient, or demanding. If you give it a little thought, it's also easy to be considerate, cheerful, resourceful and patient. You just have to do it. I have found a better attitude actually works. The more smiles I come up with, the more I get in return. Try it.
Find out how making up for lost time can pay off. Try it.
