Safe Ways to Stay Fit While Pregnant

Expanding your family is one of the most exciting parts of life. When you first find out, you look forward to growing a little basketball in your midsection. It’s all fun and exciting and new. Then the weight starts to pack on, and suddenly it’s not so cute anymore. You feel big...really big, and bloated, and uncomfortable. You start to worry whether you’ll ever be able to get the weight back off again.

One of the best ways to get in shape after baby arrives? Stay fit during your pregnancy! Unfortunately, this is a little easier said than done. It is possible though! Check out these simple tips for staying fit during your pregnancy so that you can enjoy the whole 9 months and beyond.

Swimming

This is a great exercise for pregnant women because the water takes the pressure off of your body. You know how you feel kind of weightless in the water? That’s because your weight is offset by the water. This means that those aches and pains caused by your increasing weight may be relieved in the water. Swim laps, join a water aerobics class, or just walk in the water. You’ll be able to stay in shape without the pressure on your already taxed joints.

Walking

Walking is great for almost everyone. It is low impact, adaptable, and can be done even when you are about to pop. You won’t burn massive calories, but you will burn enough to keep yourself in good shape. You will also keep your cardio level up and your joints limber, both of which will be beneficial when it comes time for labor. A treadmill, a nature path, or around the block...it doesn’t matter! Just get out there and get walking!

Yoga

Yoga is a wonderful exercise for every type of body. It is highly adaptable to your fitness level. If you can’t do a particular move, there is almost always a modifier available. It can also teach you some excellent breathing techniques that can help you through some of the pain of childbirth. Plus, yoga can be done throughout your 9 months, and then can usually be resumed shortly after birth. If you are worried about doing something strenuous while pregnant, there are even prenatal yoga classes designed specifically for pregnant women.

Staying in shape while pregnant can be a difficult task. Between your growing body, increasing exhaustion, and the stress of adding a little person to your life, exercise might be the last thing on your mind. If you can make it a priority, however, you may find it extremely beneficial for your own health and the health of your little one.
