Old Ways May Help Fight Aging Problems

By Tom Herrin

Many times people look for the newest and biggest thing available when dealing with something such as fighting dementia.  While there may be some great new things in use, some old practices may actually be simpler and highly effective.  Years ago, people didn’t really know what dementia was except for generally old age problems.  They often thought of people as losing much of their thinking abilities as they got older.  Some of the activities that they participated in then may have actually helped to deter the onset of dementia without knowing it.  When people work with their hands to create things, referred to as crafting, they may be helping to combat dementia without intending to.

Crafting May Help With Brain Development

When people participate in crafting, they are able to make their brain work productively.  The brain is much the same as any other part of the body; the more it is used, the greater the development.  Especially when the brain is used for skills that require learning new skills or information, the brain is taxed to the point that it must perform at higher levels.  This can create a lasting defense against age-related problems such as dementia that may be present for several years.

Crafting May Help Combat Depression

While dementia is a concern for many, another issue that is prevalent today is depression.  Large numbers of people deal with depression every day.  Whether it is related to school, work, family, or finances, many people struggle with trying to stay in balance.  When people are depressed, it affects everyone around.  Crafting can occupy much of people’s attention.  The mental focus combined with the intense work with the hands can literally block out all other distractions, including sound.  This can turn the attention away from those things that depress, and provide enjoyment with the success of their efforts.

Choosing Something To Create Should Not Be That Difficult

There is an abundance of things to select from if you are considering crafting.  There are fairs, magazines, and stores.  Even though everyone starts as a beginner, it doesn’t take that long to develop some skill.  Once you are an accomplished beginner, you may very well want to improve your skills.  You can do this by taking classes, joining groups, or just sharing with others in small groups or large events.  Whichever you pick, some of those things people did years ago may help solve some of today’s problems.
