Tread Lightly or Not for Health

By Tom Herrin

Everyone likely knows that one of the best, and easiest, ways to do something to improve health is to walk.  Most people can do it, and it doesn't take too much practice.  For those who prefer a little more aggressive form of exercise, running can be a good option.  Either one may be done on a track or trail or road.  There is nothing complicated to it.  When it does have a kink in the works is when the weather is less than cooperative. Heat or cold, wind or rain may be factors that can put a hold on progress for the program.  In this case, using a treadmill may keep an exercise routine on track.

Using a Treadmill Can Put People in Control

Everyone feels better when they have more control over their own situation.  This could be anything. Using a treadmill can allow people to control the environment in which they exercise. It can be a little more inviting when they can establish the temperature as well as participate in dry conditions. A treadmill also allows control of conditions such as incline, resistance, etc. Setting the speed on the treadmill can be a great help as people choose to take it slow or rev up to a higher speed.

Lower Impact Can Save Wear on the Body

In recent years, there has been much attention given to activities that are considered to be low impact.  These are things that create less wear on joints and other body parts.  Using a treadmill can be a good form of low impact exercise.  Most of them have pretty good cushion on the track.  As this makes for a less stressful workout, it also leads people to feel more motivated to get on the treadmill again.  Motivation is one of the keys to developing a successful program.

The Most Important Part of Any Program Is to Commit

Most of us have some similar obstacles with workout programs.  We start well but often run into trouble when it comes to having staying power.  Some of this may be due to having trouble with staying with a schedule.  I find that I need to establish some kind of set time.  If I don't, I struggle with getting back to whatever it is.  When I use my treadmill, I can get myself on it for a few minutes that becomes pretty productive.  After I get off, I feel refreshed.  Even those few minutes seem to provide motivation for me.  I have come to really enjoy it.
