How a Walk on the Beach Boosts Mental Health

By Brandi Goodman

A simple walk on the beach can do so much for your well-being. You may not realize it, but a walk along the shore of a vast body of water can have a calming effect on your mind. It can boost mental health. Saltair Beach, Silver Sands Beach, Sunset Beach and more are near enough to Cottonwood Heights for you to explore.

A Release of Endorphins

Endorphins get released when people exercise. Even if you're taking a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, it's still considered a workout. These released endorphins are a feel-good hormone that help to alleviate stress and make you feel calmer and happier. It's a win-win for your health.

A Boost in Vitamin D

Especially if you're walking on a sunny day, you're giving your body a boost in Vitamin D. This vitamin is needed for many functions of the body, including the brain. Low Vitamin D levels can lead to cognitive impairment. If you want to boost your mental well-being, you need to add more Vitamin D to your life. A walk on the beach can ensure you get that.

Feeling Grounded

Try walking barefoot. Walking barefoot in the sand can help you to feel grounded. The same applies to looking out at the expansive water. You'll feel more connected to the world around you and gain perspective. This is sometimes important for one's mental health.

Reduced Stress

The activity is ideal for reducing stress. The scenery around you is one of the most peaceful you can experience. This is especially true when you go at a time when no one else is around. You'll feel a sense of calm as the stress and tension leaves your body. Your mind can focus on what's around you instead of the troubles going on in your life. If you do still think about things going on, doing so in this environment can help you to gain better clarity on the situation without such stressful feelings clouding your mind.

Head to a nearby beach, or even one that's far away if you desire, and get the mental clarity you need. Make the walk as long as you need, and even take time to pause and stand still, to allow the sound of the waves and the rush of the water to calm your mind.
