If You Want Longer Life, It Is Possible

By Tom Herrin

Most of us would like to have the power to control our own destiny.  This obviously includes our health.  Who wouldn't like the thought of extending their life?  If we enjoy living, we would relish the thought that we may actually have the ability to determine greater longevity.  While it may not be a sure thing, we can do some things that may minimize health problems and increase our chances.  There are plenty of good practices available today that may help us to achieve this.  We simply need to formulate a plan and commit to following it.

Adopt a Good Diet

Even though we all know what we shouldn't eat, it is sometimes difficult to decide just what we should.  As part of our efforts to live as long a life as possible, we must seek the best diet possible.  Eating well is an essential part of good health.  Consuming more fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins can provide the basis of the best diets.  Adding healthy fats has been found to boost health as well.  On the other hand, finding ways to eliminate fried foods, too much salt, and high amounts of sugars may be well worth the effort.

Reduce Stress

Some things simply wear us down fast.  Stress is something that pretty much all of us deal with on a regular basis.  It may be finance, family, work, or any other thing.  Much of it may be brought on by the feeling that we have no control over our lives.  If we can gain control over stress, we will be way ahead.  Many people find exercise as a great way to do this.  Some use meditation.  Whatever it takes will do.  If we can identify our sources of stress, we will more likely be able to form a strategy for better control.

Do Something for Others

All of us live in a community of some kind.  Even if we have things we don't like, we are recipients of its benefits.  If we will find ways to volunteer our time and efforts, we can give back.  Serving others has its own perks.  There is really no substitute for the feeling we may get from serving.  It can lift the spirit and give us a good sense of accomplishment.  As I look at the older individuals I see serving as volunteers, I always notice the joy on their faces.  Adding quality is a significant part of enjoying a longer life.
