3 Unexpected Tips for Long-Term Weight Loss

By Genevieve Cunningham

In all seriousness, who doesn't want to lose weight? Most people would like to drop a few pounds. We want our pants to fit better. We want to feel better in a swimsuit. We want to be healthier. For many, this means eating less and moving more. But what happens when this doesn't work? What happens when you're doing everything you know to do, and the weight still won't drop? If you've been having trouble losing weight, take a look at these unexpected tips that might get you moving in the right direction.

Get More Sleep

You already know that sleep is important, but you may not realize that sleep affects your weight! If you aren't well rested, your body just won't work as efficiently as it could. It may hold onto weight as a safety measure. Your metabolism may slow down. Your digestion may be sluggish. If your weight won't drop, focus on getting high quality sleep so that your body can catch up and function to the best of its ability. Once this begins to happen, the weight may finally drop.

Talk to Yourself

The manner in which you talk to yourself is so big. If you're always negative to yourself, your body hears it! Don't tell yourself that losing weight is impossible or that it's too hard. Wake up and tell yourself that you look good. Tell yourself that the hard work is paying off. Pretty soon, your body will catch up to your thoughts, and you'll be living in a healthier body -- and a healthier mind too!

Practice Patience

Losing weight takes time. We have to stop expecting it to happen overnight. Practice the long lost art of patience. Understand that a loss of one pound per week is still a loss. Understand that meeting your goal in one year is still meeting your goal. Patience is key because weight loss is a lifestyle and not a quick fix. The more patience you have, the easier it is to stick with it, and the more likely you are to see results.

If you're having a hard time losing weight and feeling good in your skin, don't give up! You can do it. Use these slightly unexpected tips to get moving in the right direction, and you'll be enjoying a healthy body and life before you know it.
