Do You Drink Water for Your Health or From Habit?

By Tom Herrin

There are plenty of things people do because that is just the way it is.  Many things are habits.  Some of the foods people eat and some of the activities they do are just that.  When it comes to drinking water, everyone drinks it at some time.  On the down side, many people begin to substitute other things for water.  While it is not all bad, drinking some water is critical.  It is needed for all kinds of body functions.  It is a natural coolant for the body as well as one of the primary things to facilitate transporting things throughout it.  It is the most basic necessity of life and should never be bypassed for something else.

Water Can Be Key to Physical Performance

It is pretty well-known that water is a critical part of any kind of athletic activity.  Coaches and trainers have spent quite a bit of effort determining the amount and frequency of water intake necessary for peak performance.  It has been shown that when people lose as little as two percent of the water content of their body, they can suffer some loss of abilities.  Studies have shown that some athletes may lose as much as 10 percent of their water.  This can result in excessive fatigue and some fairly serious problems.

Water May Play a Big Role in Urinary Tract Health

Some people have a really painful experience with problems with kidney stones.  They are quite painful and can be seriously debilitating.  While it may not be the cure every time, drinking more water may help to dilute the materials that can cause stones.  It can help to keep them flushed from the system.  Even after the stones have developed, some small ones may be helped out of the urinary tract by drinking lots of water.  Particularly for those who tend to have such issues, drinking as much water as possible may be the best defense.

It May Help to Manage Weight

Several year ago, a diet plan was introduced that was touted as being based on drinking more water.  Dr. Maxwell Stillman was seen everywhere promoting his diet.  It was pretty sound and was based on drinking a certain amount of water before meals as well as other times.  I try to drink as much water as possible, especially when I am trying to lose weight.  It works pretty well.  It can help to curb hunger and provide a better feeling of fullness.  If you are serious about health, be sure to include plenty of water.
