Does Doubt or Confidence Affect Health?
By Tom Herrin
It is sometimes difficult to make decisions about health as there may be lots of options. There is seldom any kind of guarantee about the outcome of any kinds of things designed to help people. As much of the world struggles to overcome the virus that has had such an impact on so many, lots of people anxiously await the time when they are somewhat freed from it by a successful vaccine. As these new ones have been rolled out, there is cautious optimism. After those on the front line and other high need individuals have been offered the vaccines, they will be made available to the rest of us. When that time comes, we will have been wise to have considered how we will decide whether or not we will take it.
We Have Reason for Confidence
Vaccines have a unique place in history. After the relative success of the smallpox vaccine, many people became increasingly optimistic that all diseases could be managed in the same way. Vaccines such as DPT have been given for years with generally good results. For those of us who were young before the MMR vaccine was out, we may have experienced some pretty miserable symptoms if we had any of these. Rubella alone was responsible for many problems with unborn children. These vaccines have been like miracles for some.
We Have Reason for Doubt
While vaccines have been great for some, others have suffered from allergic reactions to the materials they were made from. Some have also had minor symptoms such as fever, pain, and minor illness. Others have had some things much more severe. Many are afraid to infuse something foreign into their bodies. Many who have taken flu vaccines in the past, ended up with flu-like symptoms.
Education Leads to Better Decisions
If we are to take vaccination seriously, we need to begin gathering information now. Many of the newer vaccines use better technology and make use of codes found within the virus. With this, they are able to help the body identify it and respond accordingly when it is encountered. While some want to be first in line, others may want to see what happens first. There will be no magic solution for making a choice, but it will need to be made just the same. Those next few months will pass fast.
