Easy Ways to Get Good Fat
By Sara Butler
If you can make one very important switch in your diet, then you can make a huge difference in your overall health: Switch out saturated fats with unsaturated fats. Yes, it's really that easy! Unsaturated fats can help to improve your blood triglyceride levels, lower the levels of bad cholesterol, and provide your body with important nutrients it needs to stay healthy.
Go Fishing
OK, so you don't actually have to go out and get your own fish, but you should think about buying more fish from your local market. At least twice per week, opt for a meal of fatty fish such as herring, mackerel, salmon, albacore tuna, sardines, or lake trout. These oily and fatty fish are full of essential omega-3 fatty acids.
Go Nuts
Sometimes it's OK to go little nuts -- by eating them. For your snacks, try munching on an ounce (about of handful) of unsalted seeds or nuts such as:
- Peanuts
- Pumpkin seeds
- Walnuts
- Pistachios
- Sunflower seeds
- Almonds
- Hazelnuts
These nuts are full of good fats, fiber, and protein to give your body the energy it needs to work at its very best.
Add in Avocado
Avocados are really good for you, so you should try to add them into your diet where you can. Eat them as a snack, bake or cook with them, or add them as a spread to your favorite sandwich. If you can swap out avocados for other things, such as mayonnaise, then you're adding essential vitamins and minerals as well as fiber and healthy fats to your diet. Don't forget, guacamole is your friend!
Check Out Some Oils
If you use oils for cooking or to make your own salad dressings, then pay attention to the type of oil you use. You want oils that are lower in saturated fats such as grapeseed, safflower, sunflower, olive, peanut, sesame, and avocado oil. Just do a little research to find out which oil is best for which preparation, as some oils will be better to cook with while others will be better to use in things such as marinades and dressings.
