How to Ease Into an Exercise Program

By Genevieve Cunningham

Exercise is extremely important. Some people look at exercise as a nice little bonus to a healthy life. It’s probably a good idea, and it will definitely help sculpt the body, but it’s not really necessary … right? Wrong! Exercise is important for weight management, efficient function of various systems in the body, and general upkeep of your health and wellness. But some people find working out incredibly difficult. And the worst part? Getting started! If you need a little help beginning a regular exercise routine, take a look at these tips to help you ease into the process.

Get a Friend

Getting a friend (or two or three!) might make it a lot easier to continue a workout. They can help keep you motivated, give you someone to laugh with throughout your routine, and keep your spirits generally higher. This person might be a spouse, a parent, a sibling, or a best friend. It doesn’t matter who it is … it just needs to be someone who you care about and enjoy spending time with. Get a workout buddy to do it with you, and getting started will seem like a little more fun than dread.

Do Less Than You Think

When you first hit the gym, you’ll probably think that you can do a lot more than you actually can. You’ll think that you’re just a little out of shape … but the reality will be that you’re way, way out of shape. To keep from burning yourself out in the first week, do much less than you think you should. Think you should walk a mile? Start with a lap. Think you should do an entire aerobics class? Start with half. Taking it down a notch can help keep your expectations real, protect your body and muscles from extreme overuse, and prevent you from quitting from the get go.

Don’t Worry About Big Changes

You’re not going to start working out and immediately drop 50 pounds, so don’t expect it. Don’t expect major changes to happen right away. Change takes time, and that’s OK. If you go into your workout routine with the knowledge that it’s a process and not a race, you’ll be more likely to enjoy the ride and probably come out with better results down the line.

Getting in exercise is important, so don’t skip it. But you don’t have to rush into it either. Ease into it if you really want it to last. An easy, methodical, slower approach is more likely to bring you long-term success and better health to last your entire life.
