Borrow From Your Kids to Improve Your Health

By Tom Herrin

Getting more exercise is something that almost everyone feels as if they need.  Just how to go about it is something else again. It is not necessary, or even wise, to jump into a program without having some kind of preparation.  Jumping as part of a program can provide plenty of health benefits however, and may be a good way to begin a new program. While it may seem childish or something that sounds like it should be for those who are younger, it can provide a good means of exercise that can be done according to whatever pace someone feels they can handle.

It Is Good to Improve Coordination

As people age, they often have more accidents.  Improving coordination may help to avoid some of these.  Jumping rope can help to build better coordination. It certainly has the potential of helping people to be lighter on their feet.  Most have the image of the boxer in training when they think of jumping rope. It offers greater foot control for them and can work for the rest of us as well.  It should carry over into many of the other things people become involved in.

It Can Burn Calories

When it comes to burning calories, jumping rope may be near king of the hill as far as bang for the buck.  It can be done at a slow and easy pace, but for those looking for some real burn, greater intensity and longer sessions can burn almost as many calories as some people take in any given day.  It far outperforms jogging. It has been said that people can burn as many as 1,300 calories in an hour of intense jumping. Even for those who prefer a more casual exercise, jumping rope can do the job.  Even a slow steady start at something like five or 10 minutes can provide a good start.

It Can Help You Remain Calm

Having the ability to stay calm under difficult circumstances can be a real plus.  When people jump rope, they have a certain amount of activity going on around them throughout the activity.  This can give them a greater sense of control in their lives and the things around them. The ability to focus may become greater.  This can help you to be able to be more successful as you manage. It can be a great attribute in developing good decision making and leadership ability.
