There Are No Rules on Exercise

By Tom Herrin

Most people limit themselves in just about whatever they do.  Some years ago, learning was believed to be about sitting up straight in the chair and writing.  Listening as someone delivered the lesson was what everyone did.  Anything else was considered to be inadequate.  Once it was discovered that there were other ways to learn, things changed quite a bit.  The same may be said of exercise.  While most probably think of the traditional kinds, in today's world, there are lots of options.  One of these deals with those who are busy all day long with a job that involves sitting as they work.  There are some good things that may be done while in that chair that can help make great use of the time.

It May Improve Concentration and Strength

Yoga is a familiar activity for most.  There is an image in the mind that is quite recognizable.  The namaste gesture is performed by sitting up straight with the feet flat on the floor.  The palms are brought around together in front of the chest.  Pressure is applied so that the muscles contract.  Holding this isometric exercise for about 20 seconds can help to work those muscles.  This may be done as many times as desired.

It May Work the Core

Many times working the core is actually easier than people may believe.  Rather than do elaborate and tedious exercises, a simple one is to sit up straight with the feet slightly above the floor.  Grabbing the desk and swiveling from one side to the other by using only the core can work that same core.  With one full swivel as a rep, doing 10 to 15 may be adequate.

It May Be a Good Chance to Work More Muscles

Once we determine which muscles we need to work, we can devise an exercise that fits that need.  Finding what works best is not that difficult.  I have had pretty good success in coming up with something I can do while sitting in a chair.  There are times when I have been able to work muscles better this way than with a more traditional exercise.  See what you can do with this.  It can be a fun challenge, and you may be surprised at how well you can develop a certain area of your body.  Developing my core and chest have been areas that I have been pleased with in such exercises.
